Hillel

Hillel Hillel at Washington College is a student-run organization for Jewish awareness that offers social, cultural and religious activities for the Washington College community. We welcome all interested students, both Jewish and non-Jewish to join us for worship, celebration, learning—and food!

The chapter's members and officers determine our activities, semester by semester, but we have some long-standing traditions that we can rely on.

The Chestertown Havurah is the local Jewish community's organization, and Hillel members are welcome at all the Havurah's events, which include High Holy Day services, a festive celebration of Sukkot, a Chanukah gathering, monthly Shabbat services, and other activities. Hillel members are invited to these events via the Hillel listserv.

Hillel, in return, holds an annual Community Seder, to which the entire campus community—and members of the Havurah—are invited. The Seder, now a 15-year tradition—is a highpoint of the College's calendar.

Hillel generally holds a lox-and-begels brunch a few times a year, and schedules other activities as the membership decides.

We invite all interested members of the Washington College community to join us. The easiest way is to join our listserv.

Washington College is developing a series of courses that will be of particular interest to Hillel members. In the spring semester of 2007, we call particular attention to three courses:

  • ENG 494 16 Jewish-American Writers (crosslisted as GEN 494 16)
  • ILC 307 10 Literature of the Holocaust (crosslisted as GRS 394 11, PHL 394 10)
  • PHL 394 12 Religion, Society and Culture of the Middle East (crosslisted as INT 394 12, ILC 394 12)

Plans for future courses are in development; we'll post them here when available.

The chapter's faculty advisor is Prof. Steven Cades.
